Read Brandt's "Sponsors of Literacy" (WAW 331) and Malcolm X's "Learning to Read" (WAW 353). After you've read, provide a definition of a literacy sponsor and apply that definition to Malcolm X's experiences. Who were his sponsors? How was his access to sponsors determined by socioeconomic conditions contingent upon race and class? Finally, in what ways did X's literacy sponsors "constrain" or negatively impact his literacy acquisition?
